Rooted In Purpose: Celebrating 2 years of Aitenga

Two years ago, Aitenga Women Empowerment Organisation was officially registered with a simple but powerful conviction , that when women are equipped with skills, confidence, and opportunity, entire communities rise with them. Today, as we mark this significant milestone, we pause to reflect on how far we have come, celebrate the people who made it possible, and look ahead with renewed purpose and ambition. From the very beginning, Aitenga’s work has been rooted in the belief that lasting change happens at the community level. Over the past two years, that belief has translated into real, measurable impact across four core programmes — reaching thousands of women, youth, and families across Uganda.

Our Tailoring Training Programme has equipped 322 women and youth with vocational skills that translate directly into income-generating opportunities. Beyond the classroom, this programme also gives back through our Carry With Love initiative, where tailoring students put their skills to use making kangaroo carriers and reusable breast pads for new and expectant mothers. To date, 720 kangaroo carriers and 120 pairs of reusable breast pads have been made and donated to vulnerable mothers ,a powerful reminder that when our students learn, society benefits.

Our Education and Career Path Programme has been our largest by reach, having supported 1,705 youth in accessing education and building sustainable career trajectories. Through our Starting Points Business Programme, 448 women and youth have been supported through mentorship, seed support, and business skills training, helping them launch and grow small businesses within their communities. Our SRHR Programme has reached 416 youth with knowledge of their sexual and reproductive health rights, alongside practical self-defence skills, because empowerment must always include safety.

Across all of this, Aitenga has built 35 or more partnerships and collaborations with organisations that share our vision , a network of support that continues to grow with every passing month.

The numbers tell a compelling story, but behind every statistic is a person whose life looks a little different because of this work. Like Immaculate Nakiganda, one of our tailoring students, who joined the programme looking for a second chance and found confidence, income, and a future she is actively building with her own hands. Or Hope R. Munguchi, one of our social workers, who shared that walking alongside vulnerable women and girls has not only allowed her to witness resilience and transformation, but has also changed the way she sees purpose.

As we step into our third year, Aitenga remains committed to deepening our impact and expanding our reach. We are working to extend our programmes, secure a permanent training space that can welcome 100 or more students at a time, and build new partnerships with organisations that share our vision. We warmly invite individuals and organisations to join us , whether through funding, collaboration, technical support, or simply spreading the word about the work we do. To every partner, funder, community member, and champion who has walked this journey with us none of this would have been possible without you. As we celebrate two years, we celebrate you too.

Here is to the next chapter. 💛
